This KDAB whitepaper makes an extensive comparison between VMs and containers and explains that, while both have a lot in common, containers are less resource-heavy, which makes them ideal for embedded. They are also very useful during the development stage, independently of whether you plan for them to be part of your deployment. Containers can also help to integrate more developers to your team efficiently and quickly. Containers address some often left out security issues and much more -- but there are also some limitations.
